THIS LETTER WAS WRITTEN BY HENRY K. THATCHER, COMMANDER OF THE USS CONSTELLATION WHO WAS PREPARING TO SAIL THE REPAIRED SHIP OUT OF THE PORTSMOUTH SHIP YARD.  IN THIS LETTER TO HIS NIECE HE IS ASKING HER TO TEACH AND LOOK AFTER A YOUNG WOMAN WHO IS BREAKING UP HOUSEKEEPING AND IN NEED OF A HOME AND EDUCATION.
DURING THE CIVIL WAR, THE CONSTELLATION, UNDER THATCHER'S COMMAND, WAS ASSIGNED TO THE MEDITERRANEAN TO GUARD UNION MERCHANT SHIPS FROM MARAUDING CONFEDERATE CRUISERS AND PRIVATEERS.
