This 8 x 10 inch Letter is 3 pages long and was written by Charles Brewster Prentiss from near Fairfax Court House, VA He served in He served in the 3rd SC Cavalry and was Detailed Guide for Brig Gen. Johnson Hagood 6/30/63. He signed up with the 2nd SC Infantry on 5/1/61 in Charleston, SC He also served in Hart's Battery SC Art 8/27/63 WIA at White House, VA. He was a graduate of South Carolina College in Columbia, SC at age 22 in 1860. He is writing to his sister Mamie in South Carolina. I fear we will suffer for want of changes of clothing as an order has been issued to carry nothing in the baggage wagons for privates except their cooking utensils and tents, and very little can one carry on his back etc. 50 of our company have gone on picket guard today & a party of them expect to go scouting, when they will most probably capture a prisoner or so. Almost every day a prisoner is taken. Our enemies as far as we know them as yet are cowards. It is said to be a fact that 2 white men & a negro kept a body of 500 from crossing a bridge for two hours by peppering them with buckshot from double barrel guns. etc. etc. Shipping includes insurance.
