    Description

A SIGNED HANDWRITTEN LETTER BY WILLIAM H. HEATH
Colonel of the 33rd Missouri Volunteers, dated MAY 15, 1916
The letter is from a friend of US Grant who shares an account of his at Vicksburg.  In part, "Perhaps one from Vicksburg will be interesting.  I went down there July 15 1863 to get additional guns at Helena, Ark. At table as we were talking about Gen. Joe Johnston some one I think Gen. Chettam said Johnston was making a sortie from Jackson Miss. - directed against Vicksburg.  'Ah!'said Gen. Grant, speaking up sharply 'he is getting ready to retreat.' And this proved to be true, for he had really begun evacuating already."
