    Description

    Known as a
    kiri-kodansu
(small personal tansu chest), this tansu chest was made of solid paulownia
    kiri
wood and used over 100 years ago in the mid Taisho Era (c. 1920) . The
    kodansu
was a special chest used to store one's personal accessories as well as money, documents and other valuables.  There are six drawers of various sizes and two doors.  The doors can be easily lifted out for open display (see picture 9).
This tansu chest is made of solid
    kiri
(paulownia) wood and has pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint construction (see  picture 11).   This chest has all its 100 year old
    deep rich patina
. This tansu chest has a total of six drawers of various sizes.  All drawers and doors move easily without binding.  It has its original key which works on both the large lower drawer (see picture 10) as well as the two sliding doors.
This chest has a century plus old original
    warm aged patina
and, having been used lovingly over the centuries, it remains in
    fine original antique condition
and should serve one well for another century of use.   It measures 24" wide by 24" high by 12" deep (60 x 60 x 30cm).  A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
    very solid and functional
    piece of furniture.
