CIVIL WAR LETTER
Libby Prisoner of War Letter -
18th Connecticut Volunteers
This Civil War POW letter was written by Dr. Lowell Holbrook (1818-1905) who was appointed surgeon in the
18th Connecticut Volunteers
in late April 1863. He was taken prisoner along with Dr. Josiah B. Harrington, his 1st Asst. Surgeon, at the Second Battle of Winchester on 15 June 1863 and held in Libby Prison until his exchange on 26 November 1863. He eventually returned to his regiment and was mustered out 27 June 1865 at Harpers Ferry.
Dr. Holbrook was the son of Horatio Holbrook (1790-1856) and Arcena Richardson (1790-1846) of Windham county, Connecticut. He was married in January 1845 to Mary (“Polly”) Ellis Fisher (1823-1892). Lowell studied medicine at University Medical College (now NYU School of Medicine), receiving his degree in 1849. He then practiced medicine for a few years in Brooklyn, New York. In 1851, he returned to Thompson, Connecticut and began attending patients there. He continued his practice until around 1902.

My Dear Wife,
Your letter of 7th instant was received yesterday acknowledging mine via Norwich. Also others via Thompson. I am happy to know of your pleasant situation among old friends. You can best judge of what arrangements you had better make & as I advised you in my last—which I trust you have received before now—you can supply yourself with any funds you may need before I may be able to assist you.
I am well and intend to bear my imprisonment with as much contentment as possible, hoping for a release soon. Should I be so fortunate, you may be assured I shall lose no time in coming to Warren should you remain there.
I received a letter from Augustus yesterday & another from my sister Mary. Augustus has been confined for some time to the home with pulmonary trouble & seems to be rather despondent. Thinks a change of climate or sea voyage only will benefit. I hope, however, to hear soon of his improvement.
I understand the matter of our exchange hinges upon the willingness of both generals to give up all non-combatants & I hope it will soon be arranged. In the meantime, let us trust in Him from whom cometh all our help.
Yours affectionately, — L. Holbrook
