CIVIL WAR LETTERCivil War Letter by Soldier in Co. I, 84th Pennsylvania Infantry
This Civil War soldier letter was written by 27 year-old Jackson Potter (1834-1862), the son of John Potter (1807-1880) and Mary Rishel (1813-1879) of Luthersburg, Clearfield county, Pennsylvania. Jackson enlisted on 1 October 1861 in
Co. I, 84th Pennsylvania Infantry
and he died on 11 July 1862 at Alexandria, Virginia.
Most of the letters were written to his father, or his sister, Jane Potter (1839-1905), and a few to other family members such as his brother, William Marion Potter (1842-1916).
Of Potter’s service, his commanding officer wrote, “the company joins with me in [conveying to you, his father,] that they have lost a true soldier and a pleasant companion.”

It is with pleasure that I take my pen to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am well, hoping that you are all the same. I received a letter today from Jane.
The paymaster is now paying a regiment here.
Jane stated to me that Jackson Horn said he is buying shingles for me. I will tell you that he is not nor he never got orders to do anything with my shingles. I wrote to you to buy me some if you can, but you need not say anything about buying for me to anybody. I want you to haul them and put them by themselves and keep them as if they was yours till I give other orders. But I think Postlethwait and Horn will never have any to do with them if they are sticking together to try to cheat me. Jackson Horn wrote to me about the price of shingles next spring and I wrote to him that I thought they would be good. He wrote nothing about my shingles to me nor I wrote nothing to him. I want you to keep them in your own possession and if you can buy a few still at a fair price, do so. I will send you the money that I get here and you can use that first.
We expect to march in a few hours. Nothing more at present. Your son, — Jackson Potter
to John Potter
Write soon. Direct as you did before. We are to start tonight about dark. That is the orders now—to be ready. We got these orders since I quit writing.
