CIVIL WAR LETTERCivil War Letter by Soldier in Co. I, 84th Pennsylvania Infantry
This Civil War soldier letter was written by 27 year-old Jackson Potter (1834-1862), the son of John Potter (1807-1880) and Mary Rishel (1813-1879) of Luthersburg, Clearfield county, Pennsylvania. Jackson enlisted on 1 October 1861 in
Co. I, 84th Pennsylvania Infantry
and he died on 11 July 1862 at Alexandria, Virginia.
Most of the letters were written to his father, or his sister, Jane Potter (1839-1905), and a few to other family members such as his brother, William Marion Potter (1842-1916).
Of Potter’s service, his commanding officer wrote, “the company joins with me in [conveying to you, his father,] that they have lost a true soldier and a pleasant companion.”

Camp Crossman
November 18th 1861
Miss Jane Potter,
I take my pen to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well, hoping that these few lines may find you in the same state of health.
We all like it well and have plenty to eat and nothing to do. I was sick for a few days when I left home but I am well now. We have got our uniforms now—two pair of pants, this coat, and one overcoat.
This regiment is all well. There has been two men died in this camp since we came in out of the Irish Brigade. One [died] on the first day we came in and one on yesterday. The boys is all well and like it well and we are in hopes that Capt. Pawley will come with a large lot of men this week. We want them just now as we have marching orders and expect to leave this day a week.
I want you to write to me what is going on about Salem. Write immediately. I have had nothing to do but sometimes to go out on dress parade a few moments and one of us has to go on guard every twenty-four hours. We have to be two hours in and four off which makes eight hours. Nothing more at present.
Your brother, — Jackson Potter
to Jane Potter
