Description
CIVIL WAR LETTERCo. H, 96th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
This Civil War soldier letter was written by Daniel Faust (1841-1915) to his mother, Rebecca (Klingerman) Faust (1812-1885), the widow of George Faust (1804-1846). Daniel wrote the letter from a camp near Brandy Station while serving as a private in
Co. H, 96th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
The rank and file of this regiment was recruited principally from Schuylkill County and many of them were eastern Pennsylvania coal miners; hence the sobriquet, “Coal Heavers.” Daniel enlisted in September 1862 and was not discharged until until June 1865.
After the war, Daniel returned to the carpentry trade but in his 40’s was working as a coal miner in Shamokin, Northumberland county, Pennsylvania. He married Susanna Steward (1844-1912).
Those interested in reading a detailed history of the 96th Pennsylvania are referred to David A. Ward’s comprehensive history of the regiment published in 2018.

Dear Mother,
I will now write a few lines to you to let you know that I am well at present and hope you are the same. I will send five dollars to you in this letter. I have sent ten dollars yesterday with the paymaster and I didn’t like to send it all for fear it might get lost.
We heard some heavy cannonading in our front this morning. It is reported that the enemy made a raid on our men and that our fellows captured a whole brigade of them. How true it is, I don’t know. So no more at present.
Dear Mother, remember me in your prayer and I remember you in my prayer. So much from your affectionate son, — Daniel Faust
