    Description

    The Black Ship was the name given to Portuguese Sailing Ships when they arrived in Southern Japan 1543.  Their impressive size and multiple masts with massive sails created quite an impression.  From that time on, the black ship became an art motif painted on porcelains intended for the European market and brought there by the same black ships.
    At the end of World War II, the Japanese government encouraged the resumption of art and crafts as a means to rebuild the war thorn economy.  The kilns long established in Kyushu revived the porcelain making industry.  This ginger jar has the the label of the company Gold Imari and a paper Imari sticker is a fine example of post war painted Imari porcelain.
    The painting is extremely well executed.  The areas are divided into three cartouches with a magnificent black ship painted within and the space in between are two Europeans dressed in costumes of the 17 century on a background decorated in the cross hatchings so typical of the colors of the Kutani kilns.   The cover is decorated with a black ship. Bands of royal blue with gold circles ringed around the neck, on the shoulder and a wider on the bottom.
