Selling a beautiful antique Chinese cabinet (
20.5" deep x 24" high x 31" wide
), mid-to-late 1800's.
Excellent condition, consistent with age, beautiful patina, colors bright and gorgeous.
A handmade chest to store blankets, pillows, bed linens, table linens, serving pieces, books, clothes, boots/shoes, picture frames, photos, etc.
The structure is solid, made from elm, a strong, richly hued wood typical of authentic 19th-century Chinese pieces.  Original brass handles on the side as pictured.
It is constructed with elaborate mortise-and-tenon joinery instead of nails. The front top panel (as pictured -9.24"x31") slides out easily to access the spacious inner cabinet. Inner space: 18.5"Dx 9.5Wx21"H.
Some small distressing and rubbing to outer paint (as shown in picture) consistent with age.
HISTORY OF MOTIF: Having been made as furniture for the home, perhaps as a gift to a newly wed couple, the decorative motifs painted on Chinese furniture are meant to bring certain kinds of luck, nuanced messages and blessings. The red lotus flowers and peonies combined with the fish on this cabinet, carry well-known blessings for domestic harmony, a fruitful and harmonious marriage, continued wealth and honor.
